Nicht jeder wird sich auf solche Spiele einlassen, da nicht jeder gerne eine Zivilisation erschafft oder ein Imperium aufbaut. Was zunächst wie ein ruhiges strategisches Genre klingt, kann Spieler auch sehr schnell ins Schwitzen bringen. Verschiedene historische Epochen oder Kriegsszenarien sind beliebte Themen dieses Genres: Postapokalypse findet selten Eingang in ein Spiel dieser Art, trotz seines nahezu perfekten Setting. Surviving the Aftermath ist nun ein Titel des gleichen Genres und beschäftigt sich thematisch mit dem Aufbau einer Kolonie, nachdem die Menschlichkeit, die wir heute für selbstverständlich halten, untergegangen ist.

Nach vielen Jahrzehnten, die von Kriegen, Naturkatastrophen und Massensterben geprägt waren, hat sich die Lage in der Welt etwas beruhigt. Zumindest in dem Maße, in dem Sie versuchen, Ihre eigene Kolonie von dem verseuchten Land zu entfernen. Zu Beginn des Spiels befinden Sie sich an einem relativ isolierten Ort mit Bäumen, etwas Wasser und radioaktiv verseuchtem Land. Nachdem Sie Ihr kleines Lager aufgebaut haben, zünden Sie die Fackel an und der Spaß – oder der Albtraum – beginnt.
In der Oberwelt gibt es nicht nur zerstörte Zivilisationen, sondern auch blühende Siedlungen und Banditenlager zu entdecken.

Die folgenden Gegenstände sind für das Überleben Ihrer Kolonie unerlässlich: Nahrung, Wasser und ein sicherer Unterschlupf. Das reicht zumindest theoretisch, um ein sinnloses Dasein zu fristen. Durch den Abbau von Holz, Plastik und anderen Ressourcen können Sie auch medizinische Versorgung, bessere Nahrung und Unterkünfte herstellen. Ihr Hauptziel ist nicht nur zu überleben, sondern zu wachsen und die Welt in einen lebenswerten Ort zu verwandeln. Wie andere Vertreter des Genres nutzt das Spiel eine Art Zeitsimulation. Im Zeitraffer können Sie den Tag auf dem Bildschirm verfolgen. Sie können das Richtungspad verwenden, um die Zeit anzuhalten oder zu beschleunigen.
Neben der Rohstoffgewinnung, die von den normalen Gruppenmitgliedern durchgeführt wird, die sich meist als Wanderer oder Flüchtlinge vor ihre Türen geflüchtet haben, gibt es auch Spezialisten, die versuchen, ihre besonderen Fähigkeiten einzusetzen, um ihren Fortschritt voranzutreiben. Normalerweise sehen Sie Ihr Lager aus der Vogelperspektive. Von dort aus steuern Sie alles Relevante zur Abrechnung. Mit den Experten geht er jedoch nach dem Bau eines Schutztors in die Oberwelt. Dort kannst du sie bis zu einer bestimmten Maximaldistanz laufen lassen und verschiedene Aktionen ausführen. Sie können nach ausländischen Lagern fragen, um Handel zu treiben, Außenposten zu errichten, einen Krieg mit Banditen zu beginnen oder die verblassten Relikte unserer modernen Zivilisation zu erkunden. Nach einer gewissen Zeit enden diese Aktionen und Sie können die Belohnungen für Ihren Deal verwenden. Die Kernidee des Spiels ist, dass Sie Ihre kleine Siedlung durch strategisch kluge Aktionen in einen wahren Garten Eden inmitten der verstrahlten Hölle der Zukunft verwandeln.
Postapokalyptischer Stadtplaner oder inkompetenter Todesbote
Das Hauptspiel findet in der Siedlung statt. Dort kannst du über ein Baumenü verschiedene Gebäude errichten und diese den Menschen in deiner Siedlung zuweisen. Neben Wohnanlagen und sanitären Einrichtungen (bzw. Vordächern) richten Sie auch Anlagen zur Gewinnung der oben genannten Ressourcen ein. Aber man muss gerade am Anfang aufpassen, seine Ressourcen und Einwohner sind sehr begrenzt, daher ist ein strategisches Vorgehen von größter Bedeutung. Wenn Sie dies nicht tun, stirbt der erste Bewohner innerhalb der ersten Woche, wie zum Beispiel in meinem Test. Für Verstorbene gibt es einen sehr ausgeklügelten Aufbewahrungsort, den Sie dringend bauen müssen, wenn Sie möchten, dass die Leichen ordnungsgemäß entsorgt werden. Der Tod der Dorfbewohner ist keine Seltenheit. Sie sterben an verschiedenen Dingen wie Strahlung, unbehandelten Krankheiten oder einfach an Hunger. Erschwerend kommt hinzu, dass mehrere Gebiete, in denen Ressourcen gefunden werden können, nach dem Abbau erschöpft sind und nicht mehr verwendet werden können. Ein Problem, das Ihrerseits viel Vorausplanung erfordert.
Entscheidungen sind oft einfach zu treffen und bieten Ressourcen oder Vorteile, die schnell realisiert werden.

Neben dem Sammeln von Rohstoffen gibt es auch verschiedene Möglichkeiten, an Lebensmittel zu kommen. Über die Karte verstreut finden Sie verschiedene Bereiche, in denen Früchte wachsen oder Tiere grasen. Über Jagdhütten oder eine Sammelstelle können Ihre Dorfbewohner diese Lebensmittel sammeln und an andere verteilen. Das Einrichten dieser Orte ist sehr einfach. Im bereitgestellten Menü wählst du das Gebäude aus, platzierst es an einer guten Stelle und baust es. Der Bau von Gebäuden verbraucht Ressourcen wie Plastik oder Holz, daher ist auch hier viel Planung nötig. Bergbaugebäuden kann über ein separates Menü ein Arbeitsgebiet zugewiesen werden.
Weitere Gebäude und Gebäude-Upgrades können durch Forschung freigeschaltet werden. Diese technologischen Untersuchungen erfordern bestimmte Punkte, die Spezialisten während ihrer Reisen in die Außenwelt sammeln können. Wie beim Siedlungsprojekt muss auch bei der Untersuchung berücksichtigt werden, was im Moment wirklich wichtig ist. Brauchen wir eine Krankenschwester oder wollen wir lieber eine ertragreichere Ernte? Sein Ermittlungsansatz ist eine Frage von Leben und Tod.
Die Postapokalypse ist ein fast traumhaftes Szenario. Den Spielern wird ein echter Grund gegeben, eine Siedlung zu errichten, und es stehen zahlreiche Optionen zur Verfügung, wie sie dieses Projekt angehen können. Vor dem Start des Spiels können Sie auch den Schwierigkeitsgrad für verschiedene Themen auswählen. Sie können zum Beispiel entscheiden, wie verseucht das Land sein soll und wie viele Start-Ressourcen Sie zur Verfügung haben möchten. Dies gibt Anfängern die Möglichkeit, sich im Spiel zurechtzufinden, ohne in einem überwältigten Sumpf zu versinken.
Der eintönige Alltag der Postapokalypse wird oft von kleinen Ereignissen unterbrochen, bei denen man Entscheidungen treffen muss. Die richtige Wahl bedeutet Belohnungen, während die falsche Wahl Ärger bringen kann. Auch der Tod eines Bewohners oder Epidemien können als Folgen dargestellt werden. Leider haben die Entwickler das Potenzial zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch nicht voll ausgeschöpft. Die richtige Entscheidung ist meist sehr offensichtlich und bietet daher wenig Emotionen.
Interessanter sind jedoch die Widrigkeiten des Wetters oder andere Katastrophen. Epidemien können Ihr Dorf heimsuchen; Wenn Sie in diesem Fall keine medizinische Versorgung installiert haben, werden Ihre Leute wie die Fliegen sterben. Außerdem verbrauchen diese Schädlinge viel Wasser, da die Menschen während einer Pandemie mehr verbrauchen. Schneestürme sind besonders schlimm. Einer dieser Stürme hat eines meiner Siedlungsprojekte ausgelöscht. Felder können in dieser Zeit nicht bestellt werden, Menschen brauchen Wärme und Krankheiten breiten sich leicht aus. Eine Nahrungsversorgung ist in dieser Zeit unerlässlich. Daher hat das Spiel selbst alles, was Vertreter dieser Franchise brauchen. Surviving the Aftermath macht im Kern alles richtig: Nur das Setting hätte man etwas besser auskosten können.
Passend für die Nintendo Switch?
Der Vorteil eines PCs ist, dass Sie mit dem Cursor und der Maus einfach auf dem Spielfeld navigieren können. Auf Konsolen benötigen Sie die Joysticks und den entsprechenden Cursor. Dies ist jedoch etwas ungenau. Nicht selten ging der Cursor weiter als er wollte. Besonders schade finde ich, dass die Stärke der Nintendo Switch nicht voll ausgeschöpft wurde. Touchscreen-Unterstützung hätte das Spiel zu einer wahren Freude gemacht. Stattdessen müssen Sie sich mit einem ungenauen Cursor und nicht intuitiven Tastenkombinationen auseinandersetzen. Leider kommt es allzu oft vor, dass einfache Befehle viele Tastenanschläge erfordern. Ein Klick auf den Touchscreen wäre eine viel effizientere Lösung.
Das Elend setzt seinen Lauf fort. Bei Naturkatastrophen wendet sich das Blatt in Sekundenschnelle!

Die Grafik ist ebenso enttäuschend wie die fehlende Touchscreen-Unterstützung. Wenn Sie den TV-Modus verwenden, erhalten Sie eine verblasste, aber noch erträgliche Grafik. Beim Wechsel zwischen der Siedlung und der Oberwelt werdet ihr jedoch zwischenzeitlich einen starken Abfall der Framerate bemerken. Die Schriftgröße ist besonders knifflig, zu klein, zumindest für meine Augen. An diesem Punkt beschloss ich, dieses Spiel im Handheld-Modus weiter zu testen. Schließlich soll man dort alles besser lesen können. Was kann schon schief gehen? Sagen wir mal so, die Idee war nicht so toll.
Im tragbaren Modus sind die Gebäude und Texturen verschwommen und daher langweilig. Manche Gebäude lassen sich nur erahnen. Eine so große Diskrepanz zwischen TV-Modus und Portable-Modus ist mir selten begegnet. Um die Schrift lesen zu können, musste ich den Bildschirm fast mit der Nase berühren. Auch die Framerate war von dieser Änderung betroffen. Vor allem in der Oberwelt, wenn die Experten wandern, kommt es zu stärkeren Rucklern. Daher ist die Migration auf Nintendo Switch als Fehlschlag anzusehen und meiner Meinung nach den Preis, den man im Nintendo eShop zahlen muss, leider nicht wert.
Der Sound von Survive Aftermath ist angemessen. Einige kleine Missionen oder Abschnitte haben einen englischsprachigen Erzähler, der den Text episch vorliest. Die Texte selbst liegen vollständig in deutscher Sprache vor. Allerdings sind mir im Laufe des Spiels kleine Tippfehler oder fehlende Buchstaben aufgefallen. Musikalisch gibt es in dieser Produktion nichts Aufregenderes als die kleineren Trompeten und Soundeffekte.
Das Spiel hat auch Probleme mit den Tutorials. Obwohl immer wieder mit diversen Erklärungen um sich geworfen wird, sind diese oft nicht klar genug formuliert. Wenn Sie beispielsweise beabsichtigen, ein Küchenhaus zu bauen, wird Ihnen erklärt, was es ist und welche Technologien Sie freischalten müssen. Aber wo genau es zu finden ist, wird nicht gesagt. Erst wenn Sie das Kleingedruckte der verschiedenen Technologie-Forschungsbereiche lesen, werden Sie fündig. Dies ist ein Problem, das einfacher hätte gelöst werden können.
