Sonic The Hedgehog 2: release date, fake, plot and sequel trailer (2023)

In early February 2022, Paramount released a Super Bowl trailer for the upcoming film, which puts a spin on the "heads or tails" idea and gives fanatics their first glimpse at the characters of Tails and Knuckles, showing Sonic and Knuckles each other facing during the The villain tells the titular hero that his future is to destroy the resistance speedster.

The clip also gave fans a glimpse of Dr. Robotnik's giant mech reminiscent of the 1992 video game Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Fortunately, this doesn't seem to be the end of the road for Sonic on the big screen - with Paramount currently confirming that a third offering will be formally enhanced, while a spin-off collection starring Knuckles is also in the works. Exciting stuff.

As things stand, the film is scheduled to open on Friday, April 1, 2022, a week earlier than originally announced.

Of course, we found out last year that release dates are more of a business concern, but if we fold our arms, there might not be much of a delay - so if we hear about it, we'll update this page.

Production on the sequel began in March 2021, with returning director Jeff Fowler confirming the information on Twitter, posting a photo of his director's chair alongside the caption: "Lights, camera, hedgehogs. Production on Sonic the Hedgehog 2 starts TODAY!”

And in June 2021, it was discovered that filming had ended - and Fowler reposted the information on Twitter.

The good news for feature film fanatics is that the dominant stars are returning, with Ben Schwartz once again voicing the titular hedgehog.

Schwartz has always been open to returning, and in a February 2021 interview with ComicBook.com, he joked that he was already studying the script, calling it "brilliant".

James Marsden and Tika Sumpter are also confirmed to reprise their roles as Tom and Maddie Wachowski, while Jim Carrey - who was reportedly the first to hint at a sequel - will reprise the position of the horrifying Dr. robotics.

No word yet on who will voice Toles of Tails, but we do know that Adam Pally and Natasha Rothwell could also return as Wade Whipple and Rachel, respectively.

Meanwhile, some major casting news has revealed that Idris Elba may become a member of the Forged, lending his voice to Knuckles - the new red-headed echidna who serves as a parent to the Master Emerald. Luther's famous person announced the news on Twitter, writing "knock knock..." alongside a photo of Knuckles' knuckles.

The first trailer for the film was revealed at The Game Awards in December 2021. The stills suggest that Dr. Robotnik lands further back on Earth in an egg-shaped spacecraft with fan-favorite man or woman Knuckles (Idris Elba).

And now, a final trailer has arrived, giving fans a glimpse into the past of Doctor Robotnik (Jim Carrey), the villainous Knuckles (Idris Elba), and the testing of James Marsden and Tails (Colleen O'Shaughnessey).

Also, at the end of the trailer, Knuckles taunts Sonic, "You're unskilled. Untrained. Unworthy!"

An official synopsis for the sequel has been revealed, which reads: “Having settled in Green Hills, Sonic is dying to prove he has what it takes to be a true hero.

"His gaze locks as Dr. Robotnik returns with a new associate, Knuckles, in pursuit of a magical emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations.

“Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a journey around the world to find the Emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.”

Tails' appearance isn't particularly sudden - he appeared briefly in the credits scene at the end of the first film, and the sequel's name font also clearly hinted at his involvement this time around.

The plot begins at the end of the first film, when Dr. Robotnik was sent through a portal to a mushroom planet where he now resides - still in possession of Sonic's feather.

Good news for enthusiasts - a third film is already in the works at Paramount before the second hits theaters.

Information was revealed about the studio in February 2022, along with claims that a spin-off TV collection specializing in Knuckles could appear on streaming platform Paramount Plus.

Haruki Satomi, CEO of Sega Corporation, said in a statement, "We are pleased to announce that 1/3 Sonic Theatrical Movie and Sonic Live Animation Primary Collection for Paramount Plus are in active development.

“We have secured a first-class partnership with Paramount and look forward to continuing to develop the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise with them.

“2022 is shaping up to be a great year for the franchise, with the second film releasing in April and Sonic Frontiers, the highly anticipated title of the video game, releasing this holiday season. Sonic has been loved by fanatics around the world for over 30 years and we look forward to continuing to bring them unforgettable moments and scholarship for decades to come.”

So far, no similar information has been found about the 0.33 movie - which isn't surprising as we don't know how the second one ends, but we'll post any updates here as they emerge.
