This guide to progressing in Terraria looks at the different obstacles you have to overcome and how to take the world to hard mode by defeating the wall of flesh and then Plantera and the endgame. I'll go through each of the bosses required to progress and outline the objectives you need to set before fighting them. Linked are guides to the bosses, how to deal with them and some suggested strategies to defeat them. These are some of the most important progress markers in Terraria and what you can do to prepare your character for them.

It's worth noting that most of the items on this list are required to succeed in Expert in 1.3. You need every perk you can get, so it becomes more important to complete the optional ones before moving on to more difficult stuff.

Tasks in normal mode - in front of the wall of flesh

• Necessary- Just have fun! This is a reference so you can learn what to do next. Explore and generally find new things. Build a series of chests and organize things, create a village for people to live and tryGet all NPCsas they help in different ways. Critics are listed here. In general, don't feel rushed and try to build a respectable place as your base. when you're having funNothing else matters.
• Spend your first few hours exploring and mining. Wood or cactus armor is a good place to start. Equip full armor at least equal to Iron, but Silver/Tungsten is better. You want at least 10-12 defense. Use your best ores to get the best weapon and pickaxe you can (gold/silver bow or melee, your choice). Explore while acquiring accessories and life crystals to reach 200 health. It is required for some events. Don't use a crystal with 180 life unless you're ready for the first boss. Keep any accessories you find so you can combine them with the Tinker Workshop later. What doesn't seem important to you may later be a better accessory.
• FailEye of Cthulu already calling him or waiting for him to attack.
• After defeating the first boss, the dryad should be in your town selling cleaning powder. This is how you can break blocks in Corruption/Crimson by turning them back to normal. This takes you to the next step. If you don't want to buy gunpowder, you can use bombs that destroy tiles. Consider turning them into sticky bombs by combining them with gel to make them work better.
• Explore the Corruption (purple evil area)/Crimson (red evil area) and destroy at least two Shadow Orbs/Crimson Hearts to get items and activate meteors. To remove these, you need the Dryad's Purifying Powder. Breaking a third summons a boss. Choose to defeat the boss first or hunt down the meteorite. I choose to kill the boss because it makes farming the meteor easier due to the attacking meteor heads and the better armor you can craft.
• Every 3 hearts/orbs destroyed, one of two bosses appears: Brain of Cthulhu (Crimson) or Eater of Worlds (Corruption). Plan the third one near a convenient boss fight area, with room to manoeuvre. Once they're dead, get the materials to craft one of the best armor sets available in normal mode. Only the Hellstone stuff is significantly better. Consider fighting the boss a second time by crushing more orbs. Additional farming requires you to do asummon object.
• While there, keep in mind the location of the Demon/Crimson Altars. They are used for crafting and can even be craftedNight's Edge and later a Terra Blade. Later, you can break them in hard mode to bless your world with minerals.
• The Goblin Army will one day invade, allowing you to unlock gear reforging and the ability to combine accessories with the Tinkerer's Workshop (10g).Find the Goblin Craftsman, explore the huge layer of the cave and acquire better armor and accessories.
• Optional- Meteors should fall after destroying orbs/hearts - eventually. You will be notified, then you have to find it somewhere on the surface. Continue your exploration and make sure you have some Meteorites and Goblin Tinkerer in your village. The Hamaxe Meteorite can be of great help, and the Meteor set allows you to fire a space weapon with no mana cost. You can also craft a phase blade using meteor ingots and gems.
• Optional- defeatqueen beein the jungle and summon it by breaking the larva in a beehive. She can drop a weapon worth using, but the main thing here is that her defeat will allow the witch doctor to move, allowing you to craft bottles. You can farm her if you want any of the four bee-themed weapons she drops. There are usually several hives in the jungle, and they're worth mapping so you can find them more easily later in the game.Chlorophyte ore deposits on the minimap, Plantera Bulbos and the Temple of the Jungle for Golem.
• Optional- Go east or west of your map where you will find the dungeon and talk to the old man at night. Failskeletonso you can enter the dungeon.
• Optional- Farm in the dungeon to get the cobalt shield through golden lockers. Always kill the big slimes as they have a 100% chance of dropping a key while the chance of other monsters is very low. There are a lot of cool things to find in these chests. While there you need to find the mechanical NPC. She will be on a leash, just talk to her and she will move into the available apartment. Keep an eye out for an alchemy table that you can hit with a take-away pickaxe to make better use of the potion ingredients (the alchemy table is only available on PC). PC players can also find the Haunting Table here, which you can later purchase from the witch doctor if you have a wizard in town.
• Optional- If you have a Cobalt Shield, create an Obsidian Skull with 20 Obsidian, which is obtained by throwing water at and mining lava.see this guide. Combine these two attachments with the Tinker's Workshop to get the Obsidian Shield, which removes recoil damage and burns from contact with meteorites and hellstones. If you are lucky you can find a Lava Amulet. Anyway, the linked guide will teach you how to craft Obsidian Skin Potions.
• Optional- With the money you earn while adventuring in the dungeon, use the Goblin Tinkerer to upgrade part of your team to Defense - +4 Defense. Crit and +Damage are more useful later, but this is debatable. You can go this route, but the point is to build on something with a lot of focus. Defense is the safe way. This makes a huge difference to your survivability in the underworld.
• Required for hard mode- get enoughpiedra hellishfrom the Underworld (60 Ore, 20 Obsidian, and an Inferno) to craft a Molten Pickaxe. You need it for hard mode ores. Getting more Hellstone is recommended as it will help you defeat Wall of Flesh if you have the full armor set. PC players can fish for a Reaver Shark out of the ocean and bypass this step.
• NecessaryEnter the underworld. Kill the voodoo demon and make sure the voodoo doll lands in the lava to start the final boss fight in normal mode. defeatwall of fleshafter acquiring the best that Normal mode has to offer. This will make the transition to hard mode much easier.

Hard mode progress

• Read more about hard modeOffers more enemies and Corruption/Crimson spreads faster. There is a new biome, the Sanctuary, that is also expanding. Don't worry about that at all. It slows down to 1/3 after defeating Plantera, but there isstillYou don't need to hurry. Enjoy the game, explore and use theterrarium weekto know the accessories that you can combine. You can easily manage the spread later by purchasing a Clentaminator that cleans the world. You might one day want to create a world where these are contained by mining around you and preventing the spread, but it's up to you.
• Required: Bless your world- Use the PwnHammer you got from Wall of Flesh and break some demon/crimson altars. Carrying potions helps significantly against the new enemies you encounter in these biomes. The more you break, the better. Try to get at least 9. Although this is dangerous because you go to Crimson/Corruption in hard mode, it gives your world the new metals. It's worth noting that Fishing in the PC version allows you to save the boxes you find in normal mode and open them on Hard. Open them wide enough and you don't have to break these altars to get gear from Hardmode ores.
• Required - Peak Progression- Pickaxes again follow a progression path: you need your Hellstone pickaxe to get to Cobalt/Palladium and one of those pickaxes to get to the next. You want at least a full set of Mithril or Orichalcum armor and related tools.Read my Hard Mode Guide for more information.,this can also be useful for finding the ore (mining). Getting the ore you need means carefully exploring the deeper areas of the game, as ores only spawn in large quantities at the bottom.
• Optional: Get Wings- I have a guide forGet wings when going into hard modethat can be useful. Otherwise, you can craft Specter boots using boots you found and the rocket boots you bought from the Goblin Tinkerer. You can also buy wings for 1 platinum if you place the witch doctor's house in a jungle biome. You can craft a small one outside of your town using Jungle Grass Seeds and Mud.
• Required: Bosses- If you build your accessories and armor, you can do thisGet ready for the three mechanical bosses. It may take some time to download all three. You can tackle them in any order, but the easiest is probably thisDestroyer (World Eater, but worse!)- This will allow you to start producing a set of sacred armor. This is important, but you can get a Mega Shark by buying a Mini Shark from the Weapons Dealer and using it as an aidThe Twinsjfirst skeleton.
• With all three mech bosses defeated, you can venture into the jungle and farm Chlorophyte Ore for even better gear, although this requires a pickaxe or a drax of holy staves and souls.
• If you defeat all three, you can now work to fight.plant, what on the other handUnlock Jungle Temple and Golem. Console players can take on Ocram after taking out all three mech bosses, allowing for a team of similar power to Chlorophyte, although Chlorophyte is much more reachable.
• Kill bosses and farm events whenever you're ready!- While other bosses have been left out in the console/mobile editions, the paths diverge greatly here. Owners of both can take on the Frost Moon and Pumpkin Moon events, the ultimate challenge for console owners.
