Before we start...
Twenty years ago, the Sonic Hacking Contest began, led by Ayla for many years. The winner of that first contest in 2002 was Sonic 2 Delta... 20 years later, the hack still goes by as Sonic Delta 40mb.
Things have changed a lot in those 20 years (and 19 games), we've gone from binary ROM editing with a hex editor and a few tools to split disassembly and brought more flexibility to game mod. But we also have 3D assets on many consoles and PCs and in recent years mods based on the Retro Engine Sonic games have been in the works with available decompilations and tools that offer a different way to mod games than just those traditional 16 bits method. There are more people than ever making submissions, regardless of when they started playing Sonic.
The league itself has changed over the last 20 years. We've moved from private entries, which are only shown to judges behind closed doors, to fully public entries that anyone can access. We went from missed deadlines and sometimes late results to guaranteed fixed dates.
We went from a pure competition to an expo option where people can choose not to be judged. Judges used to look at all sorts of things - now they're divided into three categories to make judging easy, and look in more detail than ever before. Introducing the reviews, gave detailed explanations and opinions on each item.
Not only were we promoted on a few sonic hacking sites (some still exist, some are no longer with us), but we brought ourselves together through our own website and interactive contest week with easily accessible posts and streams throughout the week on YouTube and Twitch more widely, and of course let the public vote for their own trophies, something people wouldn't have expected decades ago.
And while it used to be all on forums and IRC channels, nowadays there are other places where hacks and mods can be discussed, such as: B. Twitter and the many different Discord servers out there that teach and create their own different types of games etc .Making crafts.
I don't just want to thank this year's contestants, judges, streamers and of course those who played this week's entries. But every single person who has participated in the Sonic Hacking Contest at any point on the internet over the past twenty years. I hope twenty years later we still have the SHC in some form and the same goes for fan games with SAGE.
People come and go, their interests and lives change, but these entries are eternal, especially as the SHC Vault has kept these entries available for years for the past decade. Without the participating people there is no Sonic Hacking Contest. To be able to do this over two decades is remarkable and impressive. Who would have thought in 2002 that the SHC 2022 would still be there.
That said, despite all our best efforts, we were unable to celebrate SHC's 20th anniversary this week, and we sincerely regret that. We have a few ideas in mind to do something about this, although we've already featured many old entries through the previous pre-shows.

Epilogue
SHC is an annual event where hacks and mods come together to show off to all the fans who want to play them, and many streamers get on board to take the time to attend despite their very busy schedules - and of course let's not forget those who also rate the trophies.
Unfortunately, some judges were unable to attend this year due to personal circumstances or were unexpectedly too busy to meet voting and judging expectations. That was out of our control this year. Judging will therefore, as we have done before, be postponed for at least a few days to allow those judges who are not yet ready to complete their submissions.
We may consider earlier deadlines next year to ensure everything is filtered and reviewed in a timely manner. We may also consider making changes to the trophy voting itself to change the way voting is conducted. At the end of the day we want a great race week, there are always new things to do.
Next year we will try to introduce new judges to fill in the gaps, especially as this year has shown - people with the knowledge and experience of modding Sonic 3 AIR. In addition, there will be a number of changes. There will be a brand new website built from the ground up to improve the user experience and provide the user requested features that users have been asking for for a while. We'll also look at improving the themed trophies by renaming them depending on the category.
For several years, competition week has been held in mid-October, as this is generally the best time for most people to be available. On this occasion, unlike last year, we will not be announcing next year's match week date at this time as we decide whether to keep that date or change it to something else. However, as always, assume there will be an SHC. So if you have something you want to submit next year, keep doing it and prepare for 2023.
